Nixie

Nixie

We have just learned of another situation that we have decided to take on as our second project, and we do need help with this one. This very young birth mom is in the Philippines: three months ago she gave birth to a baby girl named Nixie. Nixie was born with a hemangioma that is significantly affecting one of her eyes. She has been able to get some treatment in the Philippines, and there was a remarkable difference for her after that treatment. However, she will need frequent and ongoing medical care, as well as some MRI’s and other possible testing to determine just how deep the effects of her hemangioma reach. Nixie’s young mommy has family here in the U.S. who are in the process of bringing the two of them here to live. They will arrive in about three weeks and will probably be residing in the Louisville area. We are working with a contact at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to try to get them connected with the right doctors there, and possibly help them get some financial assistance for Nixie’s medical costs. At the moment, TSC is trying to raise funds to help them start their new life here. Their family here in the States is already struggling to get their own life in a new country underway and aren’t in a position to provide everything needed now to also help Nixie and her mom. Nixie and her mom will have a place to live, but they will be in immediate need of bottles, clothes, and any and all baby items. Because we aren’t sure about sizes or what types of bottles and pacifiers work best for Nixie, we are trying to raise money to purchase gift cards so the family can help choose the things she will need.

Update on Nixie’s Surgery

Posted July 10, 2018

Nixie has come through her surgery. Thank you all for the prayers, and for any help you have sent their way. She still has a long way to go, though. If you would like to help, you can make a donation online here. You can also send gift cards to The Shepherd’s Crook at P.O. Box 773, West Chester, OH 45071, and we will forward those on to Nixie’s family. Here is an update from Nixie’s Aunt Lerma, and a post-operative photo:

Went for our appointment last Friday, her eyebrows are starting to come together a little crease is forming, the bulky eye is almost half now, the heat that you always feel on that part has gotten better — not too hot to touch and the sweatiness has cut down significantly. Though the doctor is not happy that she is not yet capable of opening and using that eye as much as he wanted. We are scheduled to come back in 6 weeks time, there he will decide if he will open it back up and do some needed work on it. Meanwhile, I ask him if laser is something that can be considered to help with the healing process and to hoping it would help and avoid another surgery. And he agreed and put an order for it, pending insurance approval now. This Monday she will see an eye specialist, now I am afraid what he will say as the eye is not where we wanted to be. Some healing needs to still happen, crossing our finger for that.

Update about Nixie

It’s been awhile since we posted an update on sweet little Nixie. She is growing and thriving, but still struggling with issues connected to her hemangioma. In fact, she has a surgery coming up soon. She also has an important birthday coming up on June 22. She is turning two years old! Her family is holding a special birthday celebration for her early because she will be recovering from surgery on her actual birthday. This is from her aunt, who also said, “I cannot wait till the day, that she can finally see better.”

With the situation that Nixie was in last year, she wasn’t able to celebrate her first Bday. I am glad that this year, we can able to honor her and be thankful that she is finally getting a relief with her Hemangioma. Surgery will be on the 19th and her birthday is on the 22nd. They will work on her upper lid component to save the elevator muscle. They will take all of the tumor as much as they could as long as not much blood lost occur and close it. She will require to do atleast two surgery right now that are confirm and then will do a follow up if a third surgery will be necessary. The mri shows that the eyelid is the one that they wanted to get open first as she is suffering from astigmatism already as the eye is not getting use as much as its suppose too. The surgery will take between 3-4 hours.

They also want to express their gratitude for all of the help they have been receiving from others, and when asked what other kinds of things would be helpful as they continue to help Nixie and her mother get settled into their new lives, they have asked for prayers and said that, “any gift card from Walmart, Kroger or Target would be really helpful to get whatever she may need after surgery.”

If you would like to surprise Nixie with a birthday card and/or any of the needed gift cards listed above, you can send those to (TSC’s address), clearly marked for Nixie, and we will make sure they are forwarded on. Thank you for all that you have done to change this little girl and her mommy’s whole world. Here are a few recent pictures of Nixie in her new life.

Nixie is living here in the US with her mother and her aunt. Her development is age-appropriate, and she is a very smart and happy kid. Over the past few months, she has seen her pediatrician several times, and she has been referred to a couple of other doctors, including a pediatric surgeon for future reconstructive surgery
